Having a B.S. and M.S. in Fitness & Health, many certifications, and working in the industry for 30 years, this is a question that I continue to search for an answer.
In my opinion, wellness is different for each individual and can mean many things from being able to do daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, etc .to an all around athlete. Wellness is being free from disease and illness and working toward optimal health in all dimensions of wellness including Physical, Spiritual, Psychological, Social, Emotional, and Intellectual.
I like the way Dr. Troy Adams uses a wellness model like a twister. The top of the model or twister represents wellness and the bottom represents illness. In between are innumerable combinations of wellness dimensions working towards a balance
amongst each other.
A person does not have to be a certain size or be able to run a marathon to be well. A person should be constantly working to achieve a healthier lifestyle and increasing quality and years of healthy life. Healthy lifestyle should be based on personal needs.
